Art Shell will not return as head coach of the Oakland Raiders next season, the National Football League team said on Thursday.
The Raiders issued a statement after Shell met with team owner Al Davis, saying his second stint as Oakland coach was ending after just one season.
"While Art will no longer serve as head coach, he and Mr. Davis have discussed and will continue to discuss opportunities for Art to remain a valued member of the Raider organization," the statement said.
The Raiders finished the season 2-14, the worst record in the NFL and the franchise's poorest in more than 40 years. Shell still has a year remaining on his contract.
The once proud Raiders have made three coaching changes in the last four years. Oakland is a combined 15-49 in that period.
A Hall of Fame offensive tackle in his playing days with the team, Shell previously coached the Raiders for 5 seasons until 1994 when he was fired after posting a 54-38 record.
