The Boise State running back who scored the winning points in the Fiesta Bowl, then proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on national television, says he has hired security for their wedding because of racial threats.

Ian Johnson, who is black, and Chrissy Popadics, who is white, are due to be married Saturday in Boise.

Cornerback Charles Tillman and the Chicago Bears agreed Tuesday on a six-year contract extension.

Tillman, a second-round draft choice in 2003, could be with the Bears through the 2013 season. He has started 49 games in four seasons.

At least one small explosion hit the Spanish section of Wednesday's Tour de France cycle race after a report of a bomb threat from a caller claiming to represent Basque separatist rebels ETA, the government said.

No one was hurt and the Tour, the most important race on the cycling calendar, continued after the explosion.

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank said on Tuesday he was "disappointed" in his star quarterback Michael Vick, who was indicted last week on charges of operating an illegal dog-fighting ring.

"In my heart right now for him personally I am sad. I feel badly that he potentially has put himself in a set of circumstances that are going to be very difficult for him to deal with," said Blank.

South African Gary Player should reveal names after suggesting some tour golfers were drugs cheats, his compatriot and world number 16 Rory Sabbatini said on Wednesday.

Nine-times major champion Player caused a stir at the British Open last week by suggesting at least 10 players on the professional circuit used performance-enhancing substances. However, he refused to identify any culprits.

The Chicago Cubs franchise, being sold by media group Tribune Co., has attracted credible interest from about 15 parties, and a deal for the baseball team and other assets is expected to top $1 billion, according to a source familiar with the situation.

First-round bids are likely due after the September 3 U.S. Labor Day holiday, with a winner expected to be picked in October. A deal is expected to close by the end of the year. The winner must be approved by Major League Baseball.

Tim Donaghy is expected to surrender to authorities late this week or early next. David Stern couldn't wait that long to talk about the biggest crisis his league has ever faced.

The NBA commissioner planned to hold a press conference Tuesday morning to discuss Donaghy, at the center of an alleged point-shaving scandal. The first question Stern must answer is what, and when, the league knew of the former referee's gambling habits.

Troy Polamalu signed a five-year pact on Monday to remain with the Pittsburgh Steelers that made him the team's highest paid player and the best paid safety in the National Football League.

Polamalu, 26, a Pro Bowler each season since becoming Pittsburgh's starting strong safety in 2004, will earn $33 million including bonuses of over $15 million, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

The National Football League ordered star quarterback Michael Vick on Monday not to report to training camp with his Atlanta Falcons after he was indicted on dog-fighting charges.

Vick, 27, will receive full pay during the suspension, pending the league's own review of the indictment, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in an announcement.

NBA referee Tim Donaghy, who's being investigated by the FBI for betting on games he worked, had local lawmen at his Florida home Sunday because of threatening phone calls he's received, according to The New York Post.

Three squad cars from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office arrived at Donaghy's home in Bradenton, Fla.

The England midfielder, who has been struggling to recover from an injury to his left ankle, was cheered loudly by the 27,000 fans at the Home Depot Center as he ran on to the pitch in place of striker Alan Gordon.

Irishman Padraig Harrington beat Sergio Garcia of Spain by one stroke in a four-hole British Open playoff on Sunday to land his maiden victory in a major and the first by a European for eight years.

Harrington, 35, completed the extra holes in 15 shots (level par) after the two Ryder Cup colleagues had finished the championship locked together on seven-under 277 following an incident-packed day of high drama on the east coast of Scotland.

Michael Vick's legal troubles prompted Nike on Thursday to suspend the release of its latest product line named after the Atlanta Falcons quarterback.

Nike has told retailers it will not release a fifth signature shoe, the Air Zoom Vick V, this summer. Nike spokesman Dean Stoyer said the four shoe products and three shirts that currently bear Vick's name will remain in stores.
