Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman continues to roll the dice trying to lure the San Diego Chargers to his gambling and entertainment mecca.

Although the Chargers haven’t responded — yet — to overtures from cities outside San Diego County, the team’s top negotiator said Goodman called earlier this week to say he’s still interested in having the team move to his city.

Man in Custody in Broncos Williams’ Shooting

Police arrested a 23-year-old man Friday and plan to question him about the shooting death of Denver Broncos player Darrent Williams.

Willie Clark was arrested for a parole violation after his name surfaced in the investigation, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

Sean Payton might have had the toughest coaching job in football this season, making his selection Saturday as The Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year that much more impressive.

Payton, in his first year as a head coach, didn't just lead the New Orleans Saints to a 10-6 record, the NFC South championship and a first-round playoff bye. He helped revitalize a battered city's spirit.

There was no chance Bill Cowher would walk away from the Pittsburgh Steelers without winning a Super Bowl. That became obvious during a long succession of frustrating near-misses that left him one of the most successful NFL coaches without a championship ring.

Once he finally accomplished the goal he set for himself back in 1992, saying goodbye proved much easier.

Dolphins' Taylor AP Defensive Player of Year

Jason Taylor was one hard man to find on the Miami defense this season. Until, that is, the ball was snapped and he was making the play.

Taylor’s superb all-around performance for the Dolphins earned him The Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, announced Friday. While Miami finished just 6-10 in 2006, the dynamic Taylor was having the best season of his nine-year pro career.

Raiders' Shell Out After One Season

Art Shell will not return as head coach of the Oakland Raiders next season, the National Football League team said on Thursday.

The Raiders issued a statement after Shell met with team owner Al Davis, saying his second stint as Oakland coach was ending after just one season.

Favre Skips Surgery Before Skipping Town

Now that the Green Bay Packers’ season is over, Brett Favre is skipping town. He’s also skipping the ankle surgery he was supposed to have this week.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said on Wednesday that Favre has not gone through with the arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle that originally was scheduled for Monday. And McCarthy seems to think that the three-time MVP might put the procedure off for yet another year.

Former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson was charged Wednesday with drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs, and the Maricopa County prosecutor says he wants to send him to prison.

“He has run out of second chances, at least in my book,” attorney Andrew Thomas said in a news conference.

Brady Quinn fell short again in the big game.

The surefire first-round draft pick couldn’t find a way to get Notre Dame the big win he’s been so desperate to deliver, failing for the third time this season against top 10 competition to complete more than 50 percent of his passes as Notre Dame lost 41-14 to LSU in the Sugar Bowl on Wednesday night.

Pennington Takes AP Comeback Player Honors

One rotator cuff injury often is enough to ruin a premier athlete's career. Chad Pennington overcame two in two years to win The Associated Press NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.

The New York Jets had become too accustomed to seeing Pennington leave the field with a damaged right shoulder. After the 2004 season and again midway through 2005, he underwent surgery to repair his right rotator cuff.

San Francisco Hails Zito's Arrival, Silent on Bonds

The San Francisco Giants presented Barry Zito, the most expensive pitcher in baseball history, as a new team leader on Wednesday, but stayed silent on controversial slugger Barry Bonds.

The Giants signed Zito, the 2002 American League Cy Young winner, last week to a seven-year, $126 million contract. Local media reported he would be earning nearly $5,000 a pitch as someone who plays only every four or five games.

The dynamic quarterback for the Tennessee Titans won The Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year Award on Wednesday. He did it in the same fashion he turned around the Titans' season - running away from the rest of the field.

Saban Leaves Dolphins for Alabama

Nick Saban is 'Bama bound. Ending five weeks of denials and two days of deliberation, Saban accepted the Alabama coaching job and abandoned his bid to rebuild the Miami Dolphins after only two seasons.

Miami owner Wayne Huizenga said he was informed of the decision in a meeting Wednesday at Saban's house. Huizenga announced the departure at a news conference that Saban didn't attend.

Denver's Allen Iverson scored 30 points against his old team but the Philadelphia 76ers emerged with a 108-97 road win over the Nuggets on Tuesday after their former star guard was ejected late in the game.

Iverson has been publicly critical of his former team since joining the Nuggets in December, but Denver's latest defeat saw them slip to 2-4 since they acquired the player from Philadelphia.

DeMeco Ryans came into the NFL as Houston's second choice to bolster its defense. He leaves his first pro year as The Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The linebacker, chosen at the top of the second round of last April's draft - 32 spots after the Texans made defensive end Mario Williams the first overall selection - was a runaway winner of the award announced Wednesday. Ryans led the league in solo tackles with 126, and his 156 total tackles were 33 more than the next-best rookie, Detroit linebacker Ernie Sims.

Before every NBA game, the officials meet with a player from each team. One of the things they do is pick the game ball.

The meeting probably never got more attention than it did Monday night before Minnesota faced Charlotte, marking the return of the leather ball — an unprecedented midseason equipment change to appease players and coaches.
