Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Travis Taylor was arrested early Monday outside a downtown Minneapolis nightclub, hours after the team’s season-ending 41-21 loss to St. Louis.
Taylor, 27, refused an officer’s request that he get into a waiting limousine-bus as police tried to disperse a large, unruly crowd so an ambulance could get through around 2:30 a.m., police spokesman Lt. Amelia Huffman said. Taylor was not allowing the bus to leave and began pushing the officer and the officer eventually used a Taser to subdue Taylor, she said.

Bob Knight became college basketball's all-time leader in coaching wins when Texas Tech defeated New Mexico 70-68 in Lubbock, Texas, on Monday.
Knight, enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1991, earned his 880th victory to pass long-time North Carolina coach Dean Smith and become the leader among men's Division I coaches.

Denver Broncos football player Darrent Williams was killed in a drive-by shooting early on Monday and two people with him were injured, ABC television reported.
Williams, 24, was riding in a limousine in downtown Denver after 2 a.m. (4 a.m. EST/0900 GMT) when shots fired from another vehicle hit him and a man and woman also riding in his car, ABC television reported.

The New York Giants completed a rollercoaster ride to the playoffs on Sunday, earning the final NFC wild card berth and a third game with the NFC East champion Philadelphia Eagles.
The Giants beat Washington Saturday night to finish 8-8 and virtually assure themselves a playoff spot. They officially got their postseason ticket punched when St. Louis, Houston and Carolina posted wins in early games on Sunday. They actually only needed a win by the Rams or the two by the Texans and Panthers.

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Fred Smoot will miss the last game of the season because of a jaw broken in five places from a recent car accident.
The single-vehicle crash, first revealed by coach Brad Childress at his Wednesday news conference, happened in Smoot’s hometown of Jackson, Miss. After the Vikings were eliminated from playoff contention with a 9-7 loss to the Packers last Thursday, players had the holiday weekend off.

New York Yankees legend Bobby Murcer will undergo surgery Thursday in Houston for a brain tumor, the New York Daily News reported.
Murcer, 60, had been experiencing headaches and a lack of energy recently, the newspaper reported. He underwent an MRI on Sunday and the tumor was discovered.

The government's already broad investigation into athlete steroid use appears to have widened even more, with the names of 100 baseball players who tested positive for illegal drugs now in the hands of federal investigators.
The information, which an appeals court granted to authorities Wednesday, could help the government pinpoint the source of steroids in baseball and also bolster the perjury case against Barry Bonds, who is under investigation for telling a grand jury he never knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs.

Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor says the candidacy of his likely chief rival for NFL defensive player of the year, Shawne Merriman, was tainted by a four-game steroid suspension in November.
"You really shouldn't be able to fail a test like that and play in this league, to begin with," Taylor said Wednesday. "To make the Pro Bowl and all the other awards, I think you're walking a fine line of sending the wrong message."

Three badly injured sailors were airlifted from the deck of New Zealand maxi yacht Maximus on Wednesday, while another crew were forced into life rafts as their boat sank, Sydney-Hobart race officials said.
Maximus and Dutch entry ABN AMRO were both dismasted in rough seas overnight, while the crew of Australian entry Koomooloo reported the 38-year-old timber boat was rapidly taking on water.
