The high-flying San Diego Chargers had nine players chosen for the AFC All-Star squad, while the Chicago Bears saw seven named by the NFC as the Pro Bowl conference selections were announced on Tuesday.

Record-setting running back LaDainian Tomlinson, Philip Rivers, in his first year as a starting quarterback, and tight end Antonio Gates were among the Chargers on the offense.

ESPN Acquires Stake in AFL, TV Rights

ESPN acquired national TV rights to the Arena Football League on Tuesday and also will have a minority stake in the 19-team indoor league.

The network will have a regular Monday night slot in which it will televise 14 games from March through June. The ArenaBowl title game in New Orleans will be July 29 on ABC, which also will show two regional season openers on Sunday afternoon, March 4.

Nude-Driving Lions Assistant Suspended

Detroit Lions assistant coach Joe Cullen was suspended by the NFL for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears for two arrests — one for drunken driving and one for nude driving. He also was fined $20,000 in addition to the one-week suspension.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell cited the defensive line coach for conduct detrimental to the league, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday.

Ex-Saint Sues Titans for Mascot Ending Season

Ex-Saints quarterback Adrian McPherson is suing the Tennessee Titans because their mascot hit him with a golf cart before the second half of an August exhibition.

McPherson filed his civil lawsuit Friday in Davidson County Circuit Court and also is seeking $5 million in compensatory damages for the Titans’ negligence and $15 million in punitive damages. A team spokesman said Monday afternoon the Titans were aware of the lawsuit but had no further comment.

So he came down hard on both Monday, suspending NBA scoring leader Carmelo Anthony 15 games and fining the Knicks and Nuggets an unprecedented $500,000 apiece after their brawl Saturday night.

Manning Leads Colts to Win Over Bengals

Peyton Manning threw four touchdown passes to lead the Colts to a 34-16 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Indianapolis on Monday.

Marvin Harrison caught three of Manning's TD passes and Reggie Wayne the other, with Adam Vinatieri adding two field goals as the Colts took advantage of the porous Bengals pass defense, ranked last in the NFL.

In Carmelo Anthony, Denver has the NBA's leading scorer. Sometime Monday, the Nuggets should learn how long they have to make do without him.

And the New York Knicks were expected to be told of their penalties as well from Saturday's brawl - including if the league thinks coach Isiah Thomas had any role in triggering it.

LaDainian Tomlinson turned a simple off-tackle play into an 85-yard touchdown run, lighting up Qualcomm Stadium and carrying the San Diego Chargers to a 20-9 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.

"It was absolutely perfect," Tomlinson said. "I don't know if you can draw it any better. Once I saw the crease, and the safety took a bad angle, I felt like I was running track again. ... I felt like I could go all the way."

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre completed his 4,968th pass during a 17-9 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, breaking the NFL all-time record held by Dan Marino.

Late in the second quarter, Favre tossed a 21-yard pass to Carlyle Holiday to add another record to the future Hall of Famer's brilliant career.

A missing climber found dead in a snow cave on Mount Hood was identified as a Dallas man who had placed a distress call to relatives a little more than a week ago, a person close to the family said Monday.

Searchers found the cave Sunday near the spot located by cell phone signals traced from Kelly James, who made a four-minute call to his family Dec. 10 just below the summit, said Jessica Nunez, a spokeswoman for the climber's family.

It’s one thing for South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier to read the riot act to an assistant coach for breaking NCAA rules. It’s a whole different matter when the offending person is your wife.

Spurrier said Friday that his wife, Jerri, unknowingly violated NCAA rules by sending handwritten notes to families of players who had signed with the Gamecocks.

The Chicago Bears said on Friday that tackle Tank Johnson will sit out Sunday's game against Tampa Bay following his arrest on gun charges.

Johnson, 26, was charged with six counts of possessing firearms without a license following a raid on his home in the Chicago suburbs on Thursday.

Chicago Bears' defensive tackle Terry "Tank" Johnson was charged Thursday with possession of a firearm without proper identification after police said they found six guns at his Gurnee home.

The misdemeanor charge carries a potential penalty of up to a year in jail, said Jeff Pavletic, first assistant state's attorney in Lake County.

Seahawks Stunned by 49ers Late Show

The San Francisco 49ers scored 21 points in the final quarter to stun the Seattle Seahawks 24-14 in the National Football League on Thursday in Seattle.

The Seahawks once again failed to clinch the NFC West with the loss, slipping to 8-6, while the 49ers (6-8) kept their slim playoff hopes alive.
