San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Antonio Bryant was arrested on reckless and drunken driving charges after his orange Lamborghini was seen speeding faster than 100 mph on a freeway.

Bryant, 25, was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence and resisting arrest, police Capt. Kevin Raffaelli said.

Serious about winning, the Chicago Cubs have become big spenders and are on the verge of giving Alfonso Soriano the richest contract in club history.

Soriano, a blend of power and speed, the fourth player in major league history to reach 40 homers and 40 stolen bases in a single season, has agreed to an eight-year contract worth about $136 million, according to a major league official.

Michigan-Ohio State II could get canceled by Southern California.

Michigan was impressive enough in a 42-39 loss to the Buckeyes to retain second place in the Bowl Championship Series standings released Sunday. But the Wolverines' margin is so slim that it'll be tough for them to get another shot at Ohio State in the national title game if the Trojans keep winning.

Donovan McNabb tore a ligament in his right knee and will miss the rest of the season, the third time in five years the Eagles will finish a campaign without their hard-luck quarterback.

McNabb was rolling to his right and was bumped out of bounds after throwing an incomplete pass Sunday when he grabbed his leg in pain early in the second quarter of Philadelphia's 31-13 loss to the Titans.

The Toronto Blue Jays finalized a two-year, $18.12 million contract with veteran slugger Frank Thomas on Friday, adding the former American League MVP to an already potent batting line-up.

The 38-year-old Thomas led the Oakland Athletics with 39 home runs and 114 RBI last season while hitting .270 as he rebounded from several injury-plagued seasons with his former team, the Chicago White Sox.

Shaquille O'Neal will undergo knee surgery and is set to miss four to six weeks, the Miami Heat confirmed on Friday.

Tests revealed O'Neal tore cartilage in his left knee during last Sunday's game against Houston, but the injury was originally diagnosed as a hyperextended knee.

Two central figures in the BALCO steroids probe were front and center Thursday, accused of obstructing the federal grand jury investigating performance-enhancing drugs in sports.

Elite track coach Trevor Graham pleaded not guilty to hindering the grand jury's probe, while Barry Bonds' personal trainer was ordered back to prison for refusing to cooperate with the same investigation.

Kobe Bryant is being sued by an Arkansas man, who claims the Los Angeles Lakers star deliberately elbowed him during a Memphis Grizzlies' game last year.

Bill Geeslin sat in the stands when the Lakers played in Memphis last Nov. 14. His three-page federal lawsuit filed Tuesday claims that Bryant came off the court during play, landed on Geeslin and "without provocation'' committed assault and battery when he struck Geeslin with his elbow.

Trent Green is back as Kansas City's starting quarterback, 10 weeks after a brutal head-snapping hit knocked him unconscious with a severe concussion.

Coach Herm Edwards announced Wednesday that Green will start Sunday against Oakland. On Tuesday, the two-time Pro Bowler was given medical clearance to resume full contact.

Daisuke Matsuzaka and all Japan were astonished by the Boston Red Sox's record $51.1 million bid to negotiate for the ace's services, while Major League Baseball says its eye-popping size will cause a review of the process.

"The reported magnitude of the amount paid for the right to negotiate with Matsuzaka will cause us at the end of this posting to review the system," MLB president Bob DuPuy said in an emailed response to Reuters questions.
