The NFL has fined Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson $5,000 for wearing "Ocho Cinco" on the nameplate across the back of his uniform jersey before Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons, ESPN reported Thursday.
"Ocho Cinco," signifying his uniform No. 85, is the name by which Johnson said he wanted to be called the day leading up to the game, ESPN reported.

A 20-year-old nephew of former heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick has been charged with killing him, police said Friday.
Harold Berbick and an 18-year-old man from the same eastern region were charged late Thursday and were scheduled to appear in court Friday, constable Courtney Gibbs said.

David Garrard will make his second consecutive start at quarterback in place of Byron Leftwich on Sunday when the Jacksonville Jaguars host Tennessee.
Leftwich said Thursday that coach Jack Del Rio told him before practice he was sticking with Garrard, who led the Jaguars to a 13-6 victory at Philadelphia last week and improved to 5-1 as a starter the past two seasons.

Trevor Graham, the Jamaican-born track coach who touched off a major sports doping scandal by anonymously sending authorities a syringe, was indicted by a U.S. grand jury on Thursday on three counts of making false statements related to steroid distribution.
Graham has coached some of the world's top sprinters, including Sydney Olympic triple champion Marion Jones, disgraced former 100 meters world record holder Tim Montgomery and 2004 100 meters Athens Olympic champion Justin Gatlin.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro could take another step on the road to recovery next week without the cast on the right hind leg he shattered in the Preakness nearly six months ago.
Dr. Dean Richardson said Wednesday night that Barbaro has been walking so well lately, that “we’re probably going to be removing the cast next week.”

Former New York Yankees star Don Mattingly was promoted from batting coach to bench coach of the Bronx Bombers on Wednesday, bolstering speculation he is being groomed as a successor to long-time manager Joe Torre.
Mattingly, who joined the Yankees staff in 2004 after being a special spring training instructor the previous seven years, will be replaced as hitting coach by Kevin Long, 39, who did that job the last three years for Triple-A Columbus.

Steinbrenner was taken by paramedics to UNC Hospitals on Sunday, The Daily Tar Heel reported Tuesday. Steinbrenner was released Monday morning and returned to Tampa, Fla., spokesman Howard Rubenstein said.
