Capitals Sign Teenage Center Backstrom |

The Washington Capitals have signed center Nicklas Backstrom to a three-year entry-level contract beginning next season, the team said Monday.
The 19-year-old Backstrom was the fourth overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft and has represented Sweden in two World Championships. He has been the leading scorer for Brynas in the Swedish Elite League each of the past two seasons.

NBC Sports defended its decision to cut off Saturday's telecast of the Buffalo Sabres-Ottawa Senators playoff game just as it moved into overtime in favor of the Preakness Stakes.
The network received criticism in the blogosphere and from some viewers for its decision to forgo the final minutes of the game to cover the Preakness from a Baltimore racetrack. A network spokesman said Monday that there was not much NBC could do: It was contractually obligated to carry Saturday's Preakness telecast.

Chauncey Billups nailed a three-pointer late in the final quarter to clinch the win, his arching shot with less than two minutes to play, edging the Pistons ahead at 78-76 in a wild last frame that saw the lead change hands eight times.

Triple Tour de France winner Greg LeMond rocked the doping hearing into current champion Floyd Landis on Thursday when he revealed he had been sexually abused as a child and that the Landis camp had used that information to try and prevent him testifying.
LeMond told the panel he had received an anonymous menacing phone call the night before he was due to testify and that he later traced the number to Landis's business manager Will Geoghegan.

Packers quarterback Brett Favre has changed his mind and now is expected to attend the team's mandatory minicamp this weekend, a person familiar with the situation said Wednesday.
The person, who requested anonymity because neither side planned to officially announce Favre's intention to attend, said Favre is now expected to be present when the three-day minicamp opens in Green Bay on Friday.

Cynthia Mongongu, an analytical chemist at Chatenay-Malabry laboratory outside Paris, was asked under cross-examination on Wednesday whether she had spoken to the newspaper after Landis's back-up 'B' samples were re-tested in April.

Floyd Landis, winner of last year's Tour de France, kicked off his 10-day doping hearing on Monday with a denial that he had doped himself and criticism of testing procedures in cycling's top race.
Landis's attorney Maurice Suh said in his opening statement that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) was so determined to prove Landis guilty that they had turned the case into a "holy mess."
