Watching Google Inc. rake in advertising revenue "was a wake-up call within Microsoft," the company's top technical executive, Ray Ozzie, said Tuesday. But he said Microsoft plans to do more than simply mimic Google by rolling out Web-based versions of desktop programs or following its particular search and advertising model.

More children and teens are being exposed to online pornography, mostly by accidentally viewing sexually explicit Web sites while surfing the Internet, researchers say.

Forty-two percent of Internet users aged 10 to 17 surveyed said they had seen online pornography in a recent 12-month span. Of those, 66 percent said they did not want to view the images and had not sought them out, University of New Hampshire researchers found. Their conclusions appear in February's Pediatrics, due out Monday.

Nguyen Huu Truc's trusty cell phone has revolutionized his small embroidery business — and his life.

When he bought his first mobile phone in 1995, Vietnam had just one fixed-line phone for every 100 people, and cell phones were a pricey novelty. Communication was difficult, forcing Truc to make time-consuming trips to suppliers and buyers.

As an online shopper, Claudia Race knows she must look out for scams. So as an Internet entrepreneur working out of her home in New Braunfels, Texas, Race wants to use all the tools available to assure customers they can trust the vacation-rentals service she is about to launch.

But because her small business is so new, Race said she might not qualify for the online seals of approval that Overstock.com Inc. and other larger, established companies are getting to instruct Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer browser to display a green address bar for "safe" when people visit her site.

Blame the Internet's legacy systems if Jay Glatfelter falls asleep Thursday mornings. Co-host of an online audio show about "Lost," Glatfelter must wait about 40 minutes to finish posting his program to the Internet in the hours after ABC's Wednesday night broadcast. If he were downloading it as his listeners do, the same file would take only a few minutes over a cable modem.

Robotics Fueling High-Tech, High Cost Toys

You better watch out: this holiday shopping season could be one of the priciest ever as the most tech-laden and expensive gifts for kids of all ages, from the $299 animatronic pony Butterscotch to a $300 pinball machine, show up at your neighborhood Wal-Mart or Target.

Even if Santa doesn’t leave the elusive $500 Sony PlayStation 3 under your tree, there’s still Hasbro’s $249 Nerf Showtime Hoops, a basketball “gaming system” with an electronic scoreboard and a recorded voice that can announce whether your child has launched a “brick” or hit “nothin’ but net!”

First, there was the war between eight-track tapes and cassettes. Then there was Betamax versus VHS. Now a new battle for the future of home entertainment is once again forcing consumers to choose.

High-definition DVDs are supposed to provide sharp, wide-screen images to fill the more than 30 million HD television sets that have been sold. They are also meant to replace standard definition DVDs, providing studios with a new source of profits. But after much anticipation, the two competing formats have debuted to a big yawn.

The buzz kill to this dreamy capability is that you usually need either to haul along an adapter to hook up a regular phone to the Internet or install software on any computer you want to call from, a requirement that usually limits you to your own laptop.
